Weekender: With the gravel bike from Munich to the Wallerei by the Walchensee

Out of the Everyday. Onto the Bike.

A short getaway just around the corner? This gravel tour takes you from Munich straight into the idyllic Bavarian pre-Alps, all the way to the turquoise Walchensee. Destination: the Wallerei, a hideaway where mountain panoramas meet retro chic.

Gravel Tour Munich–Walchensee: The Outbound Ride

The tour begins in the morning at the Isar in Munich. Via GrĂĽnwald and the Forest Experience Center, you’ll ride through the Pupplinger Au. Past Wolfratshausen, the route becomes increasingly alpine: gentle climbs, lush greenery, and frequent glimpses of the mountains. The route continues via Beuerberg Monastery and the idyllic Osterseen – perfect for a quick swim in warm weather. From there, it leads through the Murnauer Moos, an impressive moor landscape. Just before the final destination, a special challenge awaits: the Eschenlainetal. You may need to push your bike in parts, but you’re rewarded with spectacular nature, romantic trails, and a river crossing.

Food & Drink Stops Along the Route:

  • Wolfratshausen – various options (after 33 km)
  • “nah und gut” supermarket Beuerberg (after 45 km)
  • Habacher village store (after 66 km)
  • Edeka and bakery in Eschenlohe (after 88 km)

Destination Reached: Arriving at the Wallerei on Walchensee

After about 105 km (or 72 km if starting from Wolfratshausen) and 960 m of climbing, you’ll reach Wallerei. This charming hotel with a laid-back 70s vibe lies directly on the Walchensee and has a private lake access for guests – perfect for a post-ride dip. The Wallerei isn’t a polished design hotel but a house with character. Relax in the lakeside sauna or refuel with lentil soup and fries in the hotel’s beer garden. In the evening (Wed–Sun), the restaurant serves a delightful 3-course menu – highly recommended.

Gravel Return to Munich: Through Jachenau and via Reutberg

Many cyclists have probably crossed Jachenau on a road bike. The return leg to Munich offers the chance to explore it by gravel bike, revealing one of the region’s most scenic routes. Stop in Lenggries to restock supplies, then continue weaving through nature northward. A break at Reutberg Monastery is a must – a beer garden with an amazing mountain view. The route continues toward Holzkirchen, where after 83 km, you can catch the S-Bahn back to Munich. Those still up for more can ride the final ~35 km back to the city.

Food & Drink Stops Along the Return Route:

  • Lenggries – various options (after 48 km)
  • Reutberg Monastery (after 71 km)
  • Holzkirchen – various options (after 83 km)
