Tailfin bikepacking bags put to the test: 3 weeks across Japan

How the complete Tailfin setup performed on our Japan tour with the Lapierre Endurance road bike. A full real-world review with all pros and cons.

For our bikepacking trip through Japan, we relied on Tailfin bags mounted to our Lapierre Pulsium Endurance road bikes. Why? Because we needed a setup that was lightweight, weatherproof, and rock solid.

Our Setup at a Glance:

The Core: Tailfin Pannier Rack

The Tailfin rack isn’t bolted to the frame the usual way – it’s mounted via a special thru-axle, making it compatible with almost any modern road or gravel bike. A true game-changer for carbon frames without eyelets. One thing to note: modern UDH dropouts require a specific adapter, which Tailfin offers.

  • The carbon version is light and ultra-stiff – barely any flex, even fully loaded.
  • The combination of AeroPack (now CargoPack) and the Mini Panniers offers loads of space without negatively affecting ride quality.
  • The fixed AeroPack version was our only drawback: to remove it, we had to take off the entire rack – a bit tricky, especially when using trains or hotels frequently. The “removable” option would’ve been the better choice.

Mini Panniers: Small but Mighty

These compact side bags really impressed us. The mounting system is rock solid – no movement, no fiddling, even after long days on gravel and off-grid paths.
Pro tip: They’re perfect for heavier items like tools or cooking gear, keeping the weight close to the center. And despite the race geometry of the Pulsium, we had zero heel clearance issues.

Bar Bag System: Smart Front-End Storage

We mostly used the Bar Bag to carry our folded bike bags (for train and hotel use). Mounted securely to the bars, the modular Tailfin system is super versatile. With adapters for action cams, lights, or GPS, the cockpit stayed functional and tidy.

Frame Bag + Top Tube Bag: A Clever Combo

These two are made to work together: the strap system lines up perfectly between both bags, making mounting clean and simple. The top tube bag is rock solid and ideal for snacks, bars, or your phone – all within easy reach without dismounting.

Weatherproof, Thought-Out, Durable

Tailfin promises waterproof materials – and delivers. We faced heavy rain during parts of the tour, but everything stayed dry. Just make sure to roll and close bags properly. If you want extra security, use drybags or plastic liners inside.
And as for durability? No broken clips, no torn seams, no failed closures – everything worked flawlessly until the end.

Our Verdict on the Tailfin Setup

Would we ride with this setup again? Absolutely. With one small change: next time, we’d go for the removable AeroPack for more flexibility on multi-modal trips. Everything else exceeded expectations.

  • Stability on par with traditional racks
  • Weight savings thanks to carbon
  • Fully waterproof and well-engineered
  • A modular system that adapts to bike and route

If you’re planning a big ride – whether it’s through Japan, Norway, or the Alps – and want a light, functional, and durable setup, Tailfin is highly recommended.
