La Genzianella is a family-run bike hotel in the middle of Bormio at around 1,200 metres. One of the Stelvio climbs starts right in town, and the Gavia and Mortirolo are easy to reach. The hotel has a bike room with CCTV, a bike wash, a tool corner and a daily laundry service for your cycling kit.

Riding the Stelvio once. Who doesn’t dream of that? Combining it with a stay at a wonderful bike hotel seemed the only logical thing to do. So we packed our bags and drove to Bormio. It is in Italy, has just under 5,000 inhabitants and is actually better known among skiers as a Ski World Cup venue. At the same time, it is also an ideal base for riding the Stelvio, because one of the three climbs starts right in town. The Gavia and Mortirolo passes are also very easy to reach from here.

We love welcome you in our hotel and share the wonderful feeling we have every day, the feeling of being at one with nature.

Finding a hotel where you can keep your beloved bikes properly is usually not that easy. So we were all the more surprised when we discovered Hotel La Genzianella in the middle of Bormio. A small family-run hotel described as a “bike hotel”. Sounded good, so we booked it straight away. But what does bike hotel actually mean?

When we arrived at the hotel after travelling over the Umbrail Pass, we didn’t have to take our bikes up to the room (as in many other hotels) or park them behind the cars in some dubious garage. La Genzianella has a bike room with CCTV that can only be entered with your room key card and is locked at night. In front of it there is a bike wash, so you can get your bike spotless again after every ride. There is also a small corner with all the tools you need for minor repairs. So far, nothing left to wish for.

But there was one decisive factor that set La Genzianella apart from all the other “bike hotels” I had known so far: the laundry service. With the bike package, you can hand in a complete kit for washing every day until the evening. It is then waiting for you, freshly washed, next to the breakfast room the next morning. Brilliant service, absolutely loved it, bye bye travel wash in a tube.

The food is fantastic! You will 100 % never go to bed hungry here. Another offer that seemed a bit too wild for us, though: spaghetti for breakfast. Wait, what? If you do plan to ride Gavia, Mortirolo and Stelvio in one day, you can pre-order spaghetti and have it served straight to you at breakfast. That really fills up your carb stores. If you ever try it, please let us know right away how it was. 🙂 The rest of the breakfast is excellent too and leaves nothing to be desired. Make sure you try every single juice!

After a ride, the sauna with a glass of apple juice was the perfect place to relax. All in all, a real shame we were only there for three nights. You could definitely stay longer at this hotel, and there were a few more rides tempting us, to Livigno for example. The hotel also has a selection of route suggestions, beautifully laid out on little cards.

Hotel La Genzianella in Bormio, highly recommended!

The route you absolutely have to take.

Sehr schöner Stausee am Ende der Teerstraße, Seeumrundung eher nur mit Gravelbike zu empfehlen.
