Hotel Seeleiten sits on the South Tyrolean Wine Road, right on Lake Caldaro (Kalterer See), and has its own beach and its own winery. In the basement there is a bike room with CCTV, a workshop and a bike wash, plus rental bikes and guided rides several times a week. Because the hotel is at the lowest point of the region, you roll downhill back to it at the end of every ride. The classic from the front door is the loop over the Mendelpass and Gampenpass, around 80 kilometres.
Cycling holiday in Kaltern, South Tyrol: riding at 5-star level
If you are planning a cycling holiday in Kaltern, South Tyrol, sooner or later you will end up at Hotel Seeleiten on Lake Caldaro (Kalterer See). We stayed there and can say: rightly so.
In the basement there is a bike room with CCTV, a workshop and a bike wash. There are also rental bikes, and guided rides are offered several times a week. What we liked most: the location. Seeleiten sits at the lowest point of the region, right on the South Tyrolean Wine Road. That means wherever you ride, at the end you roll downhill back to the hotel.
On top of that you get the South Tyrol Guest Pass, which lets you use the historic Mendel funicular for free. So you can simply load your bike onto the funicular, roll out at the top and take on Monte Roen or the Mendelpass from the other side.
Spa, pool & winding down after the ride
The spa area is big. There is an adults-only area with an infinity pool and a panoramic sauna, plus a family area with a children’s pool. There are also two heated outdoor pools in the garden. But if you would rather get into real water: the hotel has its own beach on Lake Caldaro. A short walk, jump in, done.

The garden is huge, which makes it perfect for doing nothing after a ride. Lie among the palm trees, read a book, maybe grab an ice cream from the bar. On top of that there is a gym and a daily sports programme.
Food: from breakfast to a 5-course dinner
You are well looked after here three times a day. In the morning there is a big breakfast buffet, at lunchtime there is live cooking at the buffet, and in the evening a 5-course menu with a salad buffet. The cooking is a successful mix of South Tyrolean tradition and Mediterranean lightness. Honest and spot on.
Worth a special mention: Seeleiten has its own winery, and the wine is excellent. So definitely plan to take a few bottles home with you. Highly recommended.
The ride you have to do in Kaltern
The area around Lake Caldaro has a lot to offer for both road and gravel riding. Thanks to the mild climate, the season runs from March to November. There are plenty of rides straight from the hotel, and the classic is a combination of the Mendelpass and the Gampenpass. The loop covers around 80 km, two passes and a magnificent view over the Adige Valley. The Mendelpass winds its way up in 15 hairpins at a moderate 7 %. From the top you then descend to Fondo and climb back up to the Gampenpass. Demanding, but doable. The route back to Kaltern takes you through Lana and along the Wine Road.

All in all, we have rarely come across a hotel that takes cycling this seriously without cutting corners on the good life. So if you are planning a cycling holiday in Kaltern, South Tyrol, Seeleiten should definitely be on your radar.
