The Weinlandhof is a family-run hotel in Gamlitz, surrounded by the vineyards of Southern Styria and around seven kilometres from the Slovenian border. For the bikes there is a lockable bike garage, a bike wash and a small toolbox, and for the legs a pool, sauna and steam bath. Host Thomas rides a road bike himself and has put together 15 routes for different levels on Komoot. Good for anyone who likes short ramps of 10 to 14 percent and enjoys eating well in the evening.

Pretty much everyone knows the steep ramps of Tuscany. Gentle hills with vines standing in neat rows that give the landscape something really special. Quite popular with road cyclists who love climbing. Few people know that you can experience something like this much closer to home. Southern Styria, south of Graz in Austria, is not only known for excellent white wine but is also ideal terrain for road cycling.

Our base was the Weinlandhof in Gamlitz. A lovely family-run hotel, ideally located for exploring by bike. Host couple Thomas and Rosi live hospitality here with a lot of heart, on a whole different level. We have probably never been looked after so well anywhere as at the Weinlandhof. Thomas is a keen road cyclist himself and got straight on the bike with us after we arrived to show us the area. As a special service he has also put together a whole Komoot collection with 15 routes for different levels, so you don’t have to think about where to ride at all.

From ramp to ramp

And so we were soon winding our way from vineyard to vineyard and ramp to ramp. You shouldn’t be afraid of gradients of 10 to 14 %, nor of stunning views over the vineyards. In autumn there are also little stalls and huts on every corner selling roast chestnuts and Sturm, in other words new wine. A really special experience. But at other times too, so-called Buschenschanken everywhere invite you to stop for a break. These are small gardens or taverns run by wine and fruit growers, where only their own produce may be sold.

At the Weinlandhof itself there is a locked bike garage where you can keep your road bikes. Outside there is a small bike wash ready for you. After your ride, a modern wellness area with pool, sauna and steam bath is there to help you recover. The beautiful garden is also a great place to relax. Our room at the Weinlandhof had a slightly nostalgic charm that reminds you a little of your own childhood, and it was definitely cosy, especially with the terrace attached. At the breakfast buffet, besides a juicer, the big highlight is a hot plate where everyone can fry their own egg?! I was very glad to have egg specialist Anton with me. 🤞

In general, the food at the Weinlandhof, and in the whole of Southern Styria, is an absolute treat. In the hotel restaurant you can choose between traditional Styrian dishes and modern natural cuisine. For dessert, you absolutely have to have the airy meringue with mocha ice cream, almonds and fresh raspberries. We have rarely eaten anything this good.

We enjoyed every minute at the Weinlandhof and will definitely be back. Gamlitz is only about 7 km from the Slovenian border. Next time, exploring Slovenia is definitely on the agenda.

The route you absolutely have to take.
