Hotel Hohenwart is a family-run wellness hotel in Schenna, 300 metres above Merano with views of the Texel Group. It has a lockable bike room, MTB and e-MTB rental, seven saunas and three pools, including a brine pool on the roof. Every road ride from the hotel does end with around 300 metres of climbing back up. A good fit if you want a wellness hotel with a proper bike setup, kids included.

Some hotels get a new name from us. Hotel Hohenwart in Schenna is now simply the View Hotel. From the bed, from the breakfast table, from the pool, from the brine pool on the roof. Wherever you stand, the view stretches across apple orchards and vineyards all the way to the Texel Group.

A hotel with a view and a family history

Schenna sits 300 metres above Merano, above the apple orchards, looking straight into the Texel Group. Hotel Hohenwart clings to the sunny slope and has been run by the same family for generations. And it has to be said: a family hotel and a wellness hotel in one is a rare combination, and here it works. The VistaSpa is strictly adults only from 16, and there is a separate FamilySpa for everyone travelling with kids.

Getting there by car is easy. By train you go to Merano, and from there a shuttle or bus takes you up to Schenna. At the hotel you also get the South Tyrol Guest Pass, which makes buses and trains across all of South Tyrol free.

Cycling setup: bike room and MTB rental

The bike room is lockable and has plenty of space for your bikes. Even better is the MTB rental right in the hotel. I left the road bike behind for a day and rented a mountain bike instead. The bikes are really good, and on the e-MTB you get up to the Hirzer or along the Schennaberg without breaking a sweat. Perfect for an active rest day.

The highlight: VistaSpa

The wellness area is really the reason to come here. The VistaSpa spans three floors and sits in the tallest building of the hotel. The view from the spa is, accordingly, absurd.

The highlight is the brine pool on the roof. Water at 34 degrees, half infinity pool, half hot tub, with a 360-degree view of Schenna Castle and the Texel Group. Hard to describe. Just go and see for yourself.

Altogether there are three pools: the 25 m lap pool in the garden (28 degrees, heated, you can swim proper lengths), an indoor pool at 30 degrees, and the rooftop brine pool. Seven saunas and a relaxation room with a stunning view. Everything you need after a ride.

When it comes to food, the hotel delivers at three points of the day. The breakfast buffet is solid, with regional produce and fresh egg dishes from the show kitchen. In the afternoon there is the Hohenwart Marende (3 to 5 pm), a South Tyrolean tradition the hotel gets right: homemade cakes, salads and warm dishes. Perfect when you roll in after a ride and don’t want to wait until dinner. Straight from the saddle into the spa, then cake. Exactly like that. In the evening there is a five-course menu by head chef Maurizio Pitscheider, who has been with the house for decades.

The thing about the climb back

Honestly, a challenge: every road ride from the hotel ends with a climb. Schenna is up high, and the hotel sits a little higher still. Which means: wherever you ride, at the end you have to grind the 300 metres of elevation back up. Not fun on tired legs. Workaround: load the car, drive down to Merano and start there. That way you roll flat into the Vinschgau and flat back again.

If you’re not after a purist road bike camp but a wellness hotel with a good bike setup that also works for families, Hohenwart is the right place. We’ll be back. For the rooftop pool alone 🫶

The route you absolutely have to take.
