Basecamp Amsterdam, formerly The Unbound, is an eco-resort with 48 tiny houses on the edge of Amsterdam, around 20 minutes by bike from the Vondelpark and Museumplein. When we visited in 2023, bikes were allowed inside the tiny house, but there was no bike wash. The reception now also rents out bikes. From here, road bike rides take you to the North Sea, through the dunes and to Alkmaar.
Update September 2026: The Unbound is now called Basecamp Amsterdam and is part of Basecamp Eco-resorts. The address and the tiny houses are the same, and the Wikkel we stayed in can still be booked. Our review is from September 2023.
Fancy a road cycling holiday in Holland without being far from the big city of Amsterdam? The Unbound sits on the edge of the city surrounded by greenery and offers an incredible combination of design and nature. Ideal for exploring the area by road bike while enjoying moments of relaxation in your own little tiny house.
Holidays in a tiny house
We stayed in the Wikkel. Large windows on two sides let plenty of natural light into this beautiful tiny house. With great attention to detail, high-quality design pieces have been combined with inexpensive materials. The beds are so comfortable that it was sometimes hard to get motivated to go out on the road bike. And the breakfast coffee on the terrace in the morning sun somehow tasted better than at home.
The Unbound consists of lots of tiny houses spread across a park, plus hotel rooms in the main building. Besides a barrel sauna right by the lake, the Unbound also has a small wellness area and a restaurant with a beautiful view of the park. If you are too lazy after a long ride to walk the few steps to the restaurant, there is also the cabin service, which brings dinner straight to your door. The ingredients come from the Unbound’s own garden, which you can also stroll through. Every little house also has a small kitchen where you can easily cook for yourself. And of course you can take your bikes into the tiny house with you.

Road bike rides through Holland
The Unbound itself is an ideal starting point for some really beautiful road bike rides where you can discover classic Holland. We rode all the way to the North Sea beach and through lots of dune landscapes. We marvelled at futuristic architecture in Zaandam and stopped in historic Alkmaar. The centre of Amsterdam is only 20 minutes away by bike (public transport connections are unfortunately very poor).

Since the Unbound is not specifically a road bike hotel, you have to bring your own kit such as a pump and tools. There is no bike wash either. Even so, we can recommend this place without reservation. We will definitely come back here for a longer holiday. Depending on the wind direction, you hear the aircraft noise from nearby Schiphol Airport sometimes more, sometimes less, but it did not really bother us.
